So, the end of the story is that Nickel is safe and sound, chubby and round. She once was missing but now is found! Wow, I really did not plan that rhyme... ANYWAY...
Last night when we were going to bed it occurred to me that I hadn't seen Nickel since the afternoon. We couldn't remember whether she was in or out, so I did a thorough search of the entire house, including the basement, then proceeded to call around outside and clink the side of her food bowl like a crazy old lady. I even tentatively checked the street and the ally to see if she had been squished by a car, since she is basically the same color as the gray asphalt. Thankfully, I didn't find her in that condition, but I was distressed that she was missing! Richard convinced me that there was nothing I could do at 10:30 pm, so I managed to go to bed.
This morning, I called a couple of shelters, checked to make sure the company that made her ID chip had our current address, and made some "Missing" fliers. Around lunchtime Jane and I headed out for a walk with the fliers in hand.
As I was getting out the stroller, we ran into a neighbor in front of our house. I told him Nickel was missing and he tried to look concerned (not exactly a cat lover). Then he perked up his ear and held up his finger as if to say, "Hang on, do you hear that?" I eventually did hear a little meow that sounded trapped. We followed the sound across the street to a vacant house. When I looked up, this is what I saw in the attic window!
The house is being renovated, so she must have gone in while the workers were there and then got locked inside! There was no one at the house when we found her, so my neighbor got a ladder and we were able to get her down. She ran straight home to her food, then took a nice, long nap. Phew!
